At 16 Years he became an assistant instructor in karate at the Kandy YMCA dojo. His ambition at this time was to be a martial arts fighter /Actor to do exemplary rules and trained with purpose to buildup his personality for there roles. His brake in to films became no longer after when he was chosen to act and direct fight scenes in Sinhala film “Pathipthani” with unfortunately was destroyed in the 1983 communal riots. From 1978-80 he participated in several tournaments successfully and in 1982 he was an instructor at the S.L military police, some army units and security firms in martial arts defensive systems.
He conducted over 500 demonstrations and had over 3000 of students training under him in martial arts, Island wide.
He was responsible in introducing Kyokshin Karate and team work fighting to both girls and boys schools. During this period the founder of Kyokshin Karate Mas Oyama visited Sri Lanka as supersede Judge for the open karate championship held at the army gymnasium, Panagoda with the then president Hon. J.R. Jayewardene as chief guest.
 
At this tournament he caught the eye of Mas Oyama by defeating 28 contestants both local and foreign, and was awarded his 1st Dan black belt. 1983 also he was invited to participate in the 3rd world open championships in Japan in 1984. Though he could not become a winner mainly due to illness all contestants and spectators present applauded his gutsiness to keep fighting.
After the tournament he was selected for the prestigious residential combat training scholarship in Japan in samurai karate called “Uchidesi”.
At this level he devoted himself to train seven days a week, six hours a day. He sacrificed his body and mind to better his art of training also by doing.
a)      Breaking tiles by hand and body to a record level.
b)      Breaking granite stone by sledge hammer on stomach and sending over his stomach heavy vehicles.
c)      Cigarette and hat kicks breaking tiles with head, and flying kicks with foot work technique and speed of feet.
