Palitha Galapbpathai is an extremely talented professional fighter also re known as fighting star but seldom seen in Sri Lanka and the world cinema. Few Sri Lanka directors have explored his inborn talent. In martial arts however it was a director from HOLYWOOD who discovered the true potential of Palitha Galapbpaththi known as shihan paliee from Sri Lanka the tiny island of Indian Ocean in Far East Asia.
It must be said how difficult it is for a martial artist to succeed in a cinema traditionoally hostile to the genre of action /adventure. Disputes within the film industry has crippled the development genre, and, as a result, mediocre performers have thrived over skilled artist professionals, Few such so called action movies produced failed to captivate audiences lacked in trill and action! This led to the down fall of action movies in Sri Lanka and because of this; local directors refused even to consider producing them. Instead there come a string of dry comedies and films based on sexual and sentimental themes much to the despair of the fans of action/adventure movies. In such a gloomy scenario that we can introduce this rear CHMPION of Sri Lankan Martial artist.

Q-(Sunday Observer) you refrained from acting in adventure films, can we know why?
This has led to disappoint cinema fan movies away from the local cinema result a slow death of the Sinhala movie industry. Instead cinema fans have been subject to cheap films based murders, comedies and sex.
Answer (Palitha Galapbpththi)-Because it was difficult to blend the trill and the hard realities of action with the freshness of Sri Lanka films .That’s why. Elsewhere in the world action sequences aided by modern technology have produced a Mega trend of action movies. But here, they have become extinct in and due to our traditional, indigenous mindsets. This is a truly Unfortunate scenario. In the future I hope that the right people will control the industry, then this calamity would and.
Q (Sunday Observer) And what about you? Can’t you combine action with modern technology and bridge this gap in Sri Lankan cinema?

In a time when trends rush in and out, I thought it’s my duty to leave a record on such a determined personality before the time eventually erases all the memories.
The (Rawaya) newspaper hailed him as the expert of Martial Arts in Sri Lanka. And Earnest Waduge, a local critic named him as the ‘sensitive giant’ (Sanwedyi Yodaya)
Nisman Ranasingha from Lakbima made a reference to him saying.

He‘s powerfully built person .A jeep is driven over his body. Though his body gets dragged and flexed, in a flash. He’s back on his feet. This is an unbelievable feat. He vows for the genuineness of this venture. Apart from this, he smashes big ice cubes with one single kick. In an ever changing world, a strong and brave man like Palitha Galapbpaththi, is a great intellectuals with a learned mind in every sense of the term and who is considered the bench mark of Sri Lanka martial arts. He was never in a kindergarten. when his child hood He read the fifth standard text book like a fifth grader in the interview held by the principal for primary school admission( HodiPotha) Principle Mr.Jayasinghe Ambagamuwa m.v), to the Nawalapitiya Anuruddha Boys College. The principal admitted him to the highest standard Grade two. He also passed the fifth grade scholarship with high marks. Till university entrance Palitha Galapbpaththi learnt at the Rev. Sri Kawishwara thero in Olcet and Anagarika Dhrmapala time made Anuruddha Kumara Buddhist College. After Finished his O/Levels He attend the various Institutional and privet schools like Nwalapitiya Nuwana Institution ,the Ranthatiya pirivena in Gampola and ,Jayagama Institution in Ginigagthhena for extra classes for various subjects for his highest studies.
He was one of the first leading students of late Karate Master D.A.Welgama of the YMCA Dojo in Kandy Lake side.

Palitha Galappaththi received his first grade black belt from the founder of true way of fighting art of KYOKUSHIN form of karate the late Masutatsu Oyama great karate master of Japan, at the Panagoda Military base during the first 1983 open full contact knock down karate championship.Due to the excellent talent shown at this event ,he received the ‘champion ‘award and the black belt 1st dan from Mas Oyama him self, in the distinguished presence of the honorable J.R.Jayawardana .the president of Sri Lanka at that time who promised him a lot of land for the construction of the Nawalapitiya Home Gym training centre. its(World Fitness Kingdom)
Palitha Galappaththi even received a plane ticket from Oyama to travel to Japan. In January 1984 ,he was fortunate enough to represent the Sri Lanka team that travelled to Japan for the third World Full Contact Karate Championship.
This was the first step in his world tours. Historically ,the world recognized his talent from this very first open championship. From then on started Palitha’s adventurous martial arts tour of the world.
Afterwards, Palitha Galappaththi learnt karate in the kyokushin centre for many years as a resident student. He also gained sound knowledge of the Japanese Sherinji Kem po method ,the Aikido and Judo method and the ssamurai art of swordsmanship –kendo.Besides training in the martial art Shin Matsudo Dojwe Uchdesi,he was the head of the kyokushin Tesuka Sho Honbu Centre for the karate trainers of foreigners.
After year of training he fought forty black belt opponents which was the requirement for the black belt fourth dan test, and won. He also received a Japanese Bunka cultural scholarship .Palitha Galappaththi faced the world’s most difficult fighting test of facing a hundred fighting challenges ‘100 men kumite’.This was a huge step taken towards the achievement of his cinematic dream.
It must be mentioned that he was the only Sri Lankan to obtain the opportunity to participate in international championships every year since 1984 while residing in Japan.
He had participated in over 800 national and international martial arts shows, championships and training programs. He was a recognized fighting star in not only Sri Lanka but also in other countries.
His particular talent was that he was able to grasp and talk fluently in any foreign language after only a short period of time. He thus spoke about 8 languages fluently.
After the sudden death of main karate master Sosai Oyama, who was called the living god of karate,Palitha Galappaththi who was working as a professional fighter in Germany was called by the Japan’s executive IKO board to go Calcutta In India. There he gave a one man show by Keiji Sanpe’s and Shivaji Ganguli’s invitation.The show was broadcasted via television channel Doordarshi.After several attractive shows ,he was notified of being presented with the title of Sri Lanka’s branch chief (Sobwo)from Japan. Afterwards it was also a speciality that he returned to fight in the world cup in Japan(first ever karate world cup mukuhari messe Arena –Chiba June -1997)
After studying the referee and adjudicator course he was appointed not only as a judge of the Olympic karate championship but also as a first class world adjudicator. He received the responsibility and promotion of being an Asian chief in martial arts.
I call Palitha a remarkable man because he considered all these promotions as antlers made of gold.He was a fine ,down to earth man who did not indulge in vainity. But he showed the pride of our country to the whole worlds through his international conferences. His fluency and knowledge in English and Japanese was articulated with an attractive flourish. He was a sweet song to all his friends.
As he progressed as a world renowned fighter, teacher and a winner of the fourth grade black belt, he was also involved in various Hollywood films and showed his talent as the youngest fighting director.
The latest film “Rosa Mal Sayanaya”and its character Marcos are a wonderful example of his acting talent. He also showed a talent for writing since his early childhood. There was also nothing Palitha couldn’t do. In the realms of painting, singing, acting and fighting. The most recent of the tele dramas which he acted memorable roles, were diyabubula , SadadiyaArna ,Sevana giniyam, Suvanda paranowe,Sansara prarthana.He has acted in altogether 30 tele dramas.
Although there are only a few films in which he has acted, they were done with a lot of dedication on his part.
While the Sinhala cinema passed its 55th year in history, the talent he showed in the film ‘Yakada Pihatu’was extraordinary.For the first time in the history of Sri Lankan cinema,Palitha enacted a stunt for real in a car accident where he made a car go over his chest.He has also contributed in acting to the films Bahoboothayo, LeKiri Kadulu, Eka Malaka Pethi,Randiya Dahara as well as the upcoming teledrama Hara as a Gorilla .’ ‘Ira Langa Wadiya’an upcoming film by Chandrarathna Mapitigama is yet another film to reveal his great talent.
The favorable response from views was always with him.He introduced a realistic fighting experience through ‘Randiya Dahara’but why he does not receive the appreciation of the Sri Lankan cinema troubles me. Even though he has played many parts as an actor,I know very well that he still hasn’t received the fighter character of his dreams.it was only Udayakantha Warnasooriyaa who has mag=de use of at least a small bit of his talent as a fighter.
He has been an exemplary man to his friends and kind to his enemies. It might be because he never hated or schemed against anybody that all enemy forces turned into mere dust in front of him. This man with an unmatchable strength and determination had the power of the Galappaththi heroes who were forever dedicated to saving the country. I consider it an obligation to these early men, to mention him as a modern giant. He ones acted as a military fight trainer under the blessing of Densil Kobbakaduwa.
Famous astrologist ones called Palitha a diamond that has been covered by mud. Another Indian astrologer referred to him as the incarnation of one’s the ten giants of king Dutugamunu.
In whatever way that keep analyzing this man, you will also see his kindness and sensitivity through this book. This book is a dedication to the youth with a love for fighting.
I would not hesitate to call Palitha Ceylon’s first fighter writer of literature, because although there are many creations of fighting styles, There was never any publication of a work or album of fighter literature. This is new to the world.Palitha has always thought of doing something new.
Whatever way the book will be viewed and received, there would appear other books of fighter and sports literature after this book. It would be of immense value to the ideology that rises after the defeat of this cruel terrorism. It should be mentioned that this noble fighter regarded this work not only as that contains heroism and bravery, but also one that contains sensitive lifestyles and plenty of lyrical lifetimes.
I was acquainted with some of the incidents of his life stories. And every word that came from his mouth of emotion. In the past he talked with his parents and siblings before every fight over the phone. He received the blessings of his parents over the phone. Each time the sound of his heartbeat died down, he had acquired yet another victory. Although he won all these fights, he sadly lost the love fight of his family. He bore as much pain as possible in five precepts and thought of his creations while dedicating himself to medication.
Palitha was a dedicated man in everything he did. He was a very notable remarkable character due to his dedication, talent and foreign language.
Palitha gave his place as representative of Sri Lanka to other worthy people after becoming leader of the Asian Kyokushin Association. He opened the door of foreign tours to suffering fighters and helped them in improving their economic condition. Although many o the students who won their life through Palitha ,later viciously wished for his downfall and schemed against him, he intelligently and all suffering bore everything up understanding this to be the cruel of the human condition. I personally know that he never harbored any hatred ,revenge or jealousy in his heart.
Among his future plans, is one to do a cinematic production about the past glory of the country. I demand the government to help his dream come true as a form of national obligations. His talent and intelligence in all this is vast? Even if you see this man as simply one who has invaded the sphere of cinema through his acting, I request the producers who are interested ,to give him a chance as well.
You can assist him as a duty you feel towards this country. He has studied fight direction at Shawusthil cinema institution in the city of Berlin, post Dum in Germany.
As a professional fighter he has faced scary situations overseas. Ones he had to fight in freezing cold until his body becomes sweaty.
There were incidents that felt very much helpless as there was no one he knew in those countries.
Ones when he was In Germany he was surrounded by the skin head. New Natzis but he was able to fight a dual with the New Natzi leader and defeat him. It turned a new leaf in his life because it paved the way for him to fight on bets.
He took part in many fighting sessions on bets not caring about the place where he had to fight. In slum areas, in clubs ,at legal places and illegal places later he earned some money through kege combat and street fighting. With this money he built a training centre in his home town,Nawalapitiya.
When fighting, at a time he felt blood dripping from his body but next time he was up again thinking of his own innocent children. He fought half unconsciously some times. But won at that moment his rivals knew about his wonderful mental power he possessed to fight half conscious and to win in last few seconds. He received applause and many at the end of every single fight with that hardly earned money he built his house in Nawalapitiya.
He was the first Sri Lankan to take part fatal combats such as kege combats and the professional combats like ring karate and K.I fights. He has shown colors in many combats in Australia,U .S.A,Germany,Russia,India and Nepal.He endured victory or defeat with utmost impassivity.
Trough the cruelest combats in the societies of many different countries what he gained was experience which made his mind more powerful.
As a civilized person, he didn’t mind his life to a dime when he was challenged by the uncivilized, cruel underworld. He believed in self confidence and gave his strong body possible training to keep it fit .His fatal experiences as a student fighter later made him a strong, perfect martial arts teacher.
He was invited by many foreign organizations to perform his fighters and scary shows.
A heavy stone kept on the stomach been hit with a sledge, breaking tiles and poles by throwing at the body, heavy vehicles been driven on the stomach, flying kicks and somersaults are some of the events he performed. He performed all the miracles keeping only one purpose in his mind. It was to keep the name of Sri Lankan unique .He is a true Sri Lankan who love his story. Once he became fed up with his bitter experiences he got in the ruthless combats. Still he bears the sign of these fights on his body. He pawned his life to combats to earn money and succeeded in it. He was able to bear up the physical pain but he could not bear when he came to know that some fellows who were with him as friend had tried to destroy his life. According to his family members he had wept badly at this because he is a very sensitive man.
One day l asked him “You did unique things giving trouble to your body .Don’t these things hurt you?.”I didn’t expect the answer ‘No’. But these were his real words.”Oh god! Why do you think that they don’t hurt. It hurts if you pinch me, I bear the pain with effort. And later I feel it the pain in its multiples. I practiced meditation so that I can endure it without showing you .I am the only person who knows how terrible the pain is”. He laughed innocently.
Palitha Galappaththi did what he wanted. We can see the truth in his word. As he liked to be unique he endured the pain with improved mental power. But improved mental power. But he was not that successful when a fatal blow hit his married life. He suffered a lot and tried to suppress tears accepting the defeat.
I wrote Galappaththi‘s Biography so far to emphasis his right and qualifications to create a combat literature. The number of pages I have been given restricts expressing facts I want to write about.
The talents of Palitha Galappaththi who showed signs of reaching the peak in martial arts were first noticed by Mas Oyama, Japanese veteran fighter and the founder of Kyokushin.He far saw Palitha’s future and invited him to Japan.
In 1983 at the army head quarters,Panagoda,Sosai Oyama took Palitha’s hands in both his hands and said “ Kyokushin karate wa samurai karate des ano,asiano samurai karate la des ne”In simple English it says “Kyokushin karate system belongs to samurais. You are the south Asian samurai I saw in my life.(Mas Oyama Power karate magazine 1992-october-(page 14).
Mr. Sosai Oyama who was called the god of karate was born on the 27th July 1923.Palitha Galappaththi was also born on the same date and same time after 35 years. And the world famous Bruce Lee was also born on the 27th of July.If you add 2 and 7 together it is 9.The cruel war which had been raging through Sri Lanka was ended on the 18th.Its a multiple of the most powerful number 9,in arithmetic. Reasons for Palitha’s success.I assume it is due to the hour and date of his birth. According to astrology he has a powerful”Graha yoga”-“Ranahasa yoga”in his horoscope.His time of birth has given him the power to reach the top of any field not only karate, But he says “I don’t let fate dominate my life. I try my best to achieve my goals and I get the maximum use of time.”Palitha is a man with speed of an arrow and will power to achieve any goal. But fate delays his journey.
Today Palitha Galappaththi fitness kingdom in Nawalapitiya is a successful center whick gives students skills in karate also through forms of meditation.He has also acted teledramas and films as a hobby.At the same time he writes number of books.
Palitha learnt to practice karate mingled with meditations in ancient Japanese villages called Ishige and Nikko.They were the villages of ancient samurais in these traditional samurai villages there are training centres conducted by descendant of Mushashi Miyamotho the veteran samurai fighter.Palitha was fortunate enough to get himself trained at theses centers.There the books written by Mushashi Miyamotho were used to guide students, through meditation and strict disciplines.
He started to write exploring the ideas in Mahayana and Theravada Buddhism with relation to the fields of martial arts.He understood the way of living of lord Buddha.He posses a good knowledge in the power of universe,the mind power of thinking psychology ,history .He is very keen on the history of the world and often uses internet to widen his knowledge in the history. In his tours overseas he grasped the ways of fighting which belongs to different races and countries.On his journey to find the roots of martial arts he observed many types of fighting methods in countries who have stolen our most honoured ancient art of fighting ‘Angam’.
People in the world of Karate call him’Shihan Paliee’ on his voyage from hikkado island in Japan to Waldivistalk and compchathka in Russia he fought dual with Azarbijaneans,Balgerians and Russians.He displayed karate shows in Ontario and Toronto in Canada and the vicinity of Niagara Falls with teachers like Tesuka and Adricolombe.He has been to New York Connecticut ,Washington D.C and Hollywood and also has conducted training campus for thousands of students In India and the Tibet border in Nepal. His talent and future gave him the opportunity to travel to many countries not only in Asia but also in Europe as well.
Palitha Galappaththi is an embodiment of honesty and humanity. He was the pioneer to establish the central school pool for the school children to participate martial arts, he encourage women who became victims of men to learn martial arts, his articles were published in many newspapers.
Palitha is a kind personality.He treated everyone alike without considering his race, religion or cast.He introduced the rule of true fighting to the Sinhala cinema.He is the youngest martial artist in the Sinhala cinema industry.He is a well respected fight director accepted by the film corporation.Once he tried to invest a film in corporation with N.H.K in Japan but it did not succeed because of the negative attitude of bring the heroism of Sri Lanka to the world trough a film in future.
He is a life time member of the center for tele drama Palitha Galappaththi with inborn talents in martial arts, acting, writing, and music is yet to be a fully fledged artist.
He wears his hair long and an earing in his ear.I asked him about this he said”This is a symbolic earing not a mongrel fashion .Our ancient people like prices, giants and commanders in the army wore these.They must have worn these as a symbol of dignity in fighting.i want to be an embodiment of that history.i have made an offering to god in hope of making a film on our great Sudaliya and Maruwaliya.When I have fulfilled my hope I will remove my earing and get my hair cut.British made our people fools by inculcating colonial feelings in minds of them.Those people still assist Tiger garillas in our country.But our honourable president has heroic soldiers who are keen on ‘Angam Pora’ and other martial arts .They defeated the tigers today.
In this article to ‘Vandana’ magazine on September 2004 Dhanujaya Senanyake said “Palitha who wears his hair long and an earing on his ear is not only a symbol of martial arts but it is also a symbol of humanity. thats why I wrote about this tender heart and human qualities more than that of his skill fullness .It is not easy to describe his affection in words. In an arrogant world Palitha Galappaththi has remained a silent hero.
